| بل الذين كفروا في عزة وشقاق
بَلِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي عِزَّةٍ وَشِقَاقٍ |

| Yusuf Ali | But the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism.

[38:3] | Kam ahlakna min qablihim min qarninfanadaw walata heena manasin
| كم أهلكنا من قبلهم من قرن فنادوا ولات حين مناص
كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن قَرْنٍ فَنَادَوْا وَّلَاتَ حِينَ مَنَاصٍ |

| Yusuf Ali | How many generations before them did We destroy? In the end they cried (for mercy)- when there was no longer time for being saved!

[38:4] | WaAAajiboo an jaahum munthirunminhum waqala alkafiroona hatha sahirunkaththabun
| وعجبوا أن جاءهم منذر منهم وقال الكافرون هذا ساحر كذاب
وَعَجِبُوا أَن جَاءَهُم مُّنذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ وَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هَذَا سَاحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ |

| Yusuf Ali | So they wonder that a Warner has come to them from among themselves! and the Unbelievers say, "This is a sorcerer telling lies!

[38:5] | AjaAAala al-alihata ilahan wahidaninna hatha lashay-on AAujabun
| أجعل الآلهة إلها واحدا إن هذا لشيء عجاب
أَجَعَلَ الْآلِهَةَ إِلَهًا وَاحِدًا إِنَّ هَذَا لَشَيْءٌ عُجَابٌ |

| Yusuf Ali | "Has he made the gods (all) into one Allah? Truly this is a wonderful thing!"

[38:6] | Waintalaqa almalao minhum aniimshoo waisbiroo AAala alihatikuminna hatha lashay-on yuradu
| وانطلق الملأ منهم أن امشوا واصبروا على آلهتكم إن هذا لشيء يراد
وَانْطَلَقَ الْمَلَأُ مِنْهُمْ أَنِ امْشُوا وَاصْبِرُوا عَلَى آلِهَتِكُمْ إِنَّ هَذَا لَشَيْءٌ يُرَادُ |

| Yusuf Ali | And the leader among them go away (impatiently), (saying), "Walk ye away, and remain constant to your gods! For this is truly a thing designed (against you)!

| Words | |وانطلق - And went forth| الملأ - the chiefs| منهم - among them| أن - that,| امشوا - "Continue,| واصبروا - and be patient| على - over| آلهتكم - your gods.| إن - Indeed,| هذا - this| لشيء - (is) certainly a thing| يراد - intended.| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | اور اُن کے سردار (ابوطالب کے گھر میں نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی مجلس سے اٹھ کر) چل کھڑے ہوئے (باقی لوگوں سے) یہ کہتے ہوئے کہ تم بھی چل پڑو، اور اپنے معبودوں (کی پرستش) پر ثابت قدم رہو، یہ ضرور ایسی بات ہے جس میں کوئی غرض (اور مراد) ہے، |

[38:7] | Ma samiAAna bihatha feealmillati al-akhirati in hatha illa ikhtilaqun
| ما سمعنا بهذا في الملة الآخرة إن هذا إلا اختلاق
مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَذَا فِي الْمِلَّةِ الْآخِرَةِ إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا اخْتِلَاقٌ |

| Yusuf Ali | "We never heard (the like) of this among the people of these latter days: this is nothing but a made-up tale!"

| أأنزل عليه الذكر من بيننا بل هم في شك من ذكري بل لما يذوقوا عذاب
أَأُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ مِن بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُمْ فِي شَكٍّ مِّن ذِكْرِي بَلْ لَمَّا يَذُوقُوا عَذَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | "What! has the Message been sent to him - (Of all persons) among us?"...but they are in doubt concerning My (Own) Message! Nay, they have not yet tasted My Punishment!

[38:9] | Am AAindahum khaza-inu rahmatirabbika alAAazeezi alwahhabi
| أم عندهم خزائن رحمة ربك العزيز الوهاب
أَمْ عِندَهُمْ خَزَائِنُ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّكَ الْعَزِيزِ الْوَهَّابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | Or have they the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord,- the Exalted in Power, the Grantor of Bounties without measure?

[38:10] | Am lahum mulku alssamawatiwaal-ardi wama baynahuma falyartaqoofee al-asbabi
| أم لهم ملك السماوات والأرض وما بينهما فليرتقوا في الأسباب
أَمْ لَهُم مُّلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَلْيَرْتَقُوا فِي الْأَسْبَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | Or have they the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between? If so, let them mount up with the ropes and means (to reach that end)!

[38:11] | Jundun ma hunalika mahzoomunmina al-ahzabi
| جند ما هنالك مهزوم من الأحزاب
جُندٌ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُومٌ مِّنَ الْأَحْزَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | But there - will be put to flight even a host of confederates.

[38:12] | Kaththabat qablahum qawmu noohinwaAAadun wafirAAawnu thoo al-awtadi
| كذبت قبلهم قوم نوح وعاد وفرعون ذو الأوتاد
كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو الْأَوْتَادِ |

| Yusuf Ali | Before them (were many who) rejected messengers,- the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Pharaoh, the Lord of Stakes,

| Words | |كذبت - Denied| قبلهم - before them| قوم - (the) people| نوح - (of) Nuh| وعاد - and Aad| وفرعون - and Firaun,| ذو - (the) owner| الأوتاد - (of) the stakes.| |

[38:13] | Wathamoodu waqawmu lootin waas-habual-aykati ola-ika al-ahzabu
| وثمود وقوم لوط وأصحاب الأيكة أولئك الأحزاب
وَثَمُودُ وَقَوْمُ لُوطٍ وَأَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ أُوْلَئِكَ الْأَحْزَابُ |

| Yusuf Ali | And Thamud, and the people of Lut, and the Companions of the Wood; - such were the Confederates.
|
| Words | |وثمود - And Thamud| وقوم - and (the) people| لوط - (of) Lut| وأصحاب - and (the) companions| الأيكة - (of) the wood.| أولئك - Those| الأحزاب - (were) the companies.| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | اور ثمود نے اور قومِ لوط نے اور اَیکہ (بَن) کے رہنے والوں نے (یعنی قومِ شعیب نے) بھی (جھٹلایا تھا)، یہی وہ بڑے لشکر تھے، |

[38:14] | In kullun illa kaththaba alrrusulafahaqqa AAiqabi
| إن كل إلا كذب الرسل فحق عقاب
إِن كُلٌّ إِلَّا كَذَّبَ الرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ عِقَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | Not one (of them) but rejected the messengers, but My punishment came justly and inevitably (on them).
|
| Words | |إن - Not| كل - all (of them)| إلا - but| كذب - denied| الرسل - the Messengers,| فحق - so (was) just| عقاب - My penalty.| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | (اِن میں سے) ہر ایک گروہ نے رسولوں کو جھٹلایا تو (اُن پر) میرا عذاب واجب ہو گیا، |

[38:15] | Wama yanthuru haola-iilla sayhatan wahidatan ma lahamin fawaqin
| وما ينظر هؤلاء إلا صيحة واحدة ما لها من فواق
وَمَا يَنظُرُ هَؤُلَاءِ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً مَّا لَهَا مِن فَوَاقٍ |

| Yusuf Ali | These (today) only wait for a single mighty Blast, which (when it comes) will brook no delay.
|
| Words | |وما - And not| ينظر - await| هؤلاء - these| إلا - but| صيحة - a shout| واحدة - one;| ما - not| لها - for it| من - any| فواق - delay.| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | اور یہ سب لوگ ایک نہایت سخت آواز (چنگھاڑ) کا انتظار کر رہے ہیں جس میں کچھ بھی توقّف نہ ہوگا، |

[38:16] | Waqaloo rabbana AAajjil lanaqittana qabla yawmi alhisabi
| وقالوا ربنا عجل لنا قطنا قبل يوم الحساب
وَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | They say: "Our Lord! hasten to us our sentence (even) before the Day of Account!"

| Words | |وقالوا - And they say,| ربنا - "Our Lord!| عجل - Hasten| لنا - for us| قطنا - our share| قبل - before| يوم - (the) Day| الحساب - (of) the Account."| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | اور وہ کہتے ہیں: اے ہمارے رب! روزِ حساب سے پہلے ہی ہمارا حصّہ ہمیں جلد دے دے، |

[38:17] | Isbir AAala mayaqooloona waothkur AAabdana dawooda thaal-aydi innahu awwabun
| اصبر على ما يقولون واذكر عبدنا داوود ذا الأيد إنه أواب
اصْبِرْ عَلَى مَا يَقُولُونَ وَاذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوُودَ ذَا الْأَيْدِ إِنَّهُ أَوَّابٌ |

| Yusuf Ali | Have patience at what they say, and remember our servant David, the man of strength: for he ever turned (to Allah).
|
| Words | |اصبر - Be patient| على - over| ما - what| يقولون - they say,| واذكر - and remember| عبدنا - Our slave,| داوود - Dawood,| ذا - the possessor of strength.| الأيد - the possessor of strength.| إنه - Indeed, he (was)| أواب - repeatedly turning.| |

[38:18] | Inna sakhkharna aljibalamaAAahu yusabbihna bialAAashiyyi waal-ishraqi
| إنا سخرنا الجبال معه يسبحن بالعشي والإشراق
إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا الْجِبَالَ مَعَهُ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالْإِشْرَاقِ |

| Yusuf Ali | It was We that made the hills declare, in unison with him, Our Praises, at eventide and at break of day,

| Words | |إنا - Indeed, We| سخرنا - subjected| الجبال - the mountains| معه - with him| يسبحن - glorifying| بالعشي - in the evening| والإشراق - and [the] sunrise.| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | بے شک ہم نے پہاڑوں کو اُن کے زیرِ فرمان کر دیا تھا، جو (اُن کے ساتھ مل کر) شام کو اور صبح کو تسبیح کیا کرتے تھے، |

[38:19] | Waalttayra mahshooratankullun lahu awwabun
| والطير محشورة كل له أواب
وَالطَّيْرَ مَحْشُورَةً كُلٌّ لَّهُ أَوَّابٌ |

| Yusuf Ali | And the birds gathered (in assemblies): all with him did turn (to Allah).
|
| Words | |والطير - And the birds| محشورة - assembled,| كل - all| له - with him| أواب - repeatedly turning.| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | اور پرندوں کو بھی جو (اُن کے پاس) جمع رہتے تھے، ہر ایک ان کی طرف (اطاعت کے لئے) رجوع کرنے والا تھا، |

[38:20] | Washadadna mulkahu waataynahualhikmata wafasla alkhitabi
| وشددنا ملكه وآتيناه الحكمة وفصل الخطاب
وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُ وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ الْخِطَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | We strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment in speech and decision.
|
| Words | |وشددنا - And We strengthened| ملكه - his kingdom| وآتيناه - and We gave him| الحكمة - [the] wisdom| وفصل - and decisive| الخطاب - speech.| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | اور ہم نے اُن کے ملک و سلطنت کو مضبوط کر دیا تھا اور ہم نے انہیں حکمت و دانائی اور فیصلہ کن اندازِ خطاب عطا کیا تھا، |

[38:21] | Wahal ataka nabao alkhasmi ithtasawwaroo almihraba
| وهل أتاك نبأ الخصم إذ تسوروا المحراب
وَهَلْ أَتَاكَ نَبَأُ الْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا الْمِحْرَابَ |

| Yusuf Ali | Has the Story of the Disputants reached thee? Behold, they climbed over the wall of the private chamber;

| Words | |وهل - And has (there)| أتاك - come to you| نبأ - (the) news| الخصم - (of) the litigants,| إذ - when| تسوروا - they climbed over the wall| المحراب - (of) the chamber?| |
| Tahir ul Qadri | اور کیا آپ کے پاس جھگڑنے والوں کی خبر پہنچی؟ جب وہ دیوار پھاند کر (داؤد علیہ السلام کی) عبادت گاہ میں داخل ہو گئے، |

[38:22] | Ith dakhaloo AAala dawoodafafaziAAa minhum qaloo la takhaf khasmanibagha baAAduna AAala baAAdinfaohkum baynana bialhaqqi walatushtit waihdina ila sawa-ialssirati
| إذ دخلوا على داوود ففزع منهم قالوا لا تخف خصمان بغى بعضنا على بعض فاحكم بيننا بالحق ولا تشطط واهدنا إلى سواء الصراط
إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَى دَاوُودَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ قَالُوا لَا تَخَفْ خَصْمَانِ بَغَى بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ فَاحْكُم بَيْنَنَا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَاهْدِنَا إِلَى سَوَاءِ الصِّرَاطِ |

| Yusuf Ali | When they entered the presence of David, and he was terrified of them, they said: "Fear not: we are two disputants, one of whom has wronged the other: Decide now between us with truth, and treat us not with injustice, but guide us to the even Path..

| Tahir ul Qadri | جب وہ داؤد (علیہ السلام) کے پاس اندر آگئے تو وہ اُن سے گھبرائے، انہوں نے کہا: گھبرائیے نہیں، ہم (ایک) مقدّمہ میں دو فریق ہیں، ہم میں سے ایک نے دوسرے پر زیادتی کی ہے۔ آپ ہمارے درمیان حق و انصاف کے ساتھ فیصلہ کر دیں اور حد سے تجاوز نہ کریں اور ہمیں سیدھی راہ کی طرف رہبری کر دیں، |

[38:23] | Inna hatha akhee lahu tisAAunwatisAAoona naAAjatan waliya naAAjatun wahidatun faqalaakfilneeha waAAazzanee fee alkhitabi
| إن هذا أخي له تسع وتسعون نعجة ولي نعجة واحدة فقال أكفلنيها وعزني في الخطاب
إِنَّ هَذَا أَخِي لَهُ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِيَ نَعْجَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِي فِي الْخِطَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | "This man is my brother: He has nine and ninety ewes, and I have (but) one: Yet he says, 'commit her to my care,' and is (moreover) harsh to me in speech."

[38:24] | Qala laqad thalamakabisu-ali naAAjatika ila niAAajihi wa-innakatheeran mina alkhulata-i layabghee baAAduhum AAalabaAAdin illa allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo alssalihati waqaleelun mahum wathanna dawoodu annama fatannahufaistaghfara rabbahu wakharra rakiAAan waanaba
| قال لقد ظلمك بسؤال نعجتك إلى نعاجه وإن كثيرا من الخلطاء ليبغي بعضهم على بعض إلا الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات وقليل ما هم وظن داوود أنما فتناه فاستغفر ربه وخر راكعا وأناب
قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَى نِعَاجِهِ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الْخُلَطَاءِ لَيَبْغِي بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ وَظَنَّ دَاوُودُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّاهُ فَاسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ |

| Yusuf Ali | (David) said: "He has undoubtedly wronged thee in demanding thy (single) ewe to be added to his (flock of) ewes: truly many are the partners (in business) who wrong each other: Not so do those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and how few are they?"...and David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance).

| Tahir ul Qadri | داؤد (علیہ السلام) نے کہا: تمہاری دُنبی کو اپنی دُنبیوں سے ملانے کا سوال کر کے اس نے تم سے زیادتی کی ہے اور بیشک اکثر شریک ایک دوسرے پر زیادتی کرتے ہیں سوائے اُن لوگوں کے جو ایمان لائے اور نیک عمل کئے، اور ایسے لوگ بہت کم ہیں۔ اور داؤد (علیہ السلام) نے خیال کیا کہ ہم نے (اس مقدّمہ کے ذریعہ) اُن کی آزمائش کی ہے، سو انہوں نے اپنے رب سے مغفرت طلب کی اور سجدہ میں گر پڑے اور توبہ کی، |

[38:25] | Faghafarna lahu thalikawa-inna lahu AAindana lazulfa wahusna maabin
| فغفرنا له ذلك وإن له عندنا لزلفى وحسن مآب
فَغَفَرْنَا لَهُ ذَلِكَ وَإِنَّ لَهُ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَى وَحُسْنَ مَآبٍ |

| Yusuf Ali | So We forgave him this (lapse): he enjoyed, indeed, a Near Approach to Us, and a beautiful place of (Final) Return.

[38:26] | Ya dawoodu inna jaAAalnakakhaleefatan fee al-ardi faohkum bayna alnnasibialhaqqi wala tattabiAAi alhawa fayudillakaAAan sabeeli Allahi inna allatheena yadilloonaAAan sabeeli Allahi lahum AAathabun shadeedun bimanasoo yawma alhisabi
| يا داوود إنا جعلناك خليفة في الأرض فاحكم بين الناس بالحق ولا تتبع الهوى فيضلك عن سبيل الله إن الذين يضلون عن سبيل الله لهم عذاب شديد بما نسوا يوم الحساب
يَا دَاوُودُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاكَ خَلِيفَةً فِي الْأَرْضِ فَاحْكُم بَيْنَ النَّاسِ بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ الْهَوَى فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَضِلُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ بِمَا نَسُوا يَوْمَ الْحِسَابِ |

We did indeed make thee a vicegerent on earth: so judge thou between men in truth (and justice): Nor follow thou the lusts (of thy heart), for they will mislead thee from the Path of Allah: for those who wander astray from the Path of Allah, is a Penalty Grievous, for that they forget the Day of Account.

| Tahir ul Qadri | اے داؤد! بے شک ہم نے آپ کو زمین میں (اپنا) نائب بنایا سو تم لوگوں کے درمیان حق و انصاف کے ساتھ فیصلے (یا حکومت) کیا کرو اور خواہش کی پیروی نہ کرنا ورنہ (یہ پیروی) تمہیں راہِ خدا سے بھٹکا دے گی، بے شک جو لوگ اﷲ کی راہ سے بھٹک جاتے ہیں اُن کے لئے سخت عذاب ہے اس وجہ سے کہ وہ یومِ حساب کو بھول گئے، |

[38:27] | Wama khalaqna alssamaawaal-arda wama baynahuma batilanthalika thannu allatheena kafaroofawaylun lillatheena kafaroo mina alnnari
| وما خلقنا السماء والأرض وما بينهما باطلا ذلك ظن الذين كفروا فويل للذين كفروا من النار
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاءَ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَاطِلًا ذَلِكَ ظَنُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنَ النَّارِ |

| Yusuf Ali | Not without purpose did We create heaven and earth and all between! that were the thought of Unbelievers! but woe to the Unbelievers because of the Fire (of Hell)!

| أم نجعل الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات كالمفسدين في الأرض أم نجعل المتقين كالفجار
أَمْ نَجْعَلُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ كَالْمُفْسِدِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَمْ نَجْعَلُ الْمُتَّقِينَ كَالْفُجَّارِ |

| Yusuf Ali | Shall We treat those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, the same as those who do mischief on earth? Shall We treat those who guard against evil, the same as those who turn aside from the right?

كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُوْلُوا الْأَلْبَابِ |

| Yusuf Ali | (Here is) a Book which We have sent down unto thee, full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that men of understanding may receive admonition.

وَوَهَبْنَا لِدَاوُودَ سُلَيْمَانَ نِعْمَ الْعَبْدُ إِنَّهُ أَوَّابٌ |

| Yusuf Ali | To David We gave Solomon (for a son),- How excellent in Our service! Ever did he turn (to Us)!
